Contrary to what many people believe – even very smart people – wealth doesn’t come from winning the lottery. It doesn’t come from breaking the law (typically).
It rarely comes from dunking a basketball or throwing a devastating left hook.
In 99.9% of all cases, wealth is generated from successful entrepreneurship, plain and simple.
Is entrepreneurship hard? Of course it is!
But the odds of success are infinitely greater than the more “glamorous” routes to prosperity, like becoming an entertainer or a sports “star.”
But it's too hard, too risky, and it costs too much money!
Hey, single moms start businesses all the time.
So do immigrants still struggling to learn English. So do high school kids. So do felons who can’t find a job because no one will hire them.

Of course, learning to run a business takes time, experimentation, and the ability to endure frequent disappointment. To do that, you need an attitude that says “I WILL succeed, no matter how many times I fail! I will build my fortune, NO MATTER WHAT!”
Where does this indomitable spirit come from?
There are a few different sources, but a lot of times, it comes from having entrepreneurial parents.

I’m not talking about the kind of “rich” parents who spoil their kids, and allow them to squander a fortune on useless degrees in Art History because, well, “That’s what Jimmy wants to do!”
I’m talking about parents who build generational wealth. The wealthiest families make sure their children understand how to keep the fortune going via business and investment.
A perfect example of this would be the Rothschilds.
Wealth is a mentality.

What a great guy, right?
NOT! Nonetheless, he did some things that are worthy of emulation.
Mayor Amschel Rothchild made his fortune by starting a bank in the 1700’s.
Instead of spoiling his kids, he trained his sons to start their own banks. They trained their children, and so it’s gone up to the present day.
But the training a kid receives doesn’t need to be as specific as this.
It may come in the form of encouragement to start a lemonade stand, mow lawns, or sell baseball cards, and to use the profits to hire friends. It may come in the form of teaching a child to buy a few penny stocks, and to keep track of them.
By the time these kids are adults, they’ve heard enough, seen enough, and done enough to take for granted the idea that they can become wealthy entrepreneurs.
If they take a job, it’s just to gain experience and make connections before venturing out on their own.
To stay an employee – to accept a meager salary and a 9 to 5 schedule – would be an aberration to everything they’ve learned up to that point.
Compare that to your own upbringing.
How many business meetings were you allowed to sit-in on? How many investment strategies were explained to you? How many negotiations did you hear?
Were you told to start a paper route, or a babysitting business, or to buy penny stocks?

Most of our parents were good, honest, hardworking employees – not masters of the universe. They may have had a business, but not necessarily the time or energy to us how to start one ourselves. We didn’t get the amount of guidance or encouragement given to the “Roth-children.”
